Following the successful 2017 edition, where 20 book nominations were submitted, IASPM is pleased to launch a call for nominations for the 2019 IASPM Book Prize. As in previous editions, the IASPM Book Prize will be awarded to two outstanding first books by a single author on popular music, one in English, the other in any other language. The report and verdict of the Book Prize Jury will be presented at the next IASPM Biennial Conference, to be held in Canberra, Australia, 24-28 June 2019.
Nominations are invited from IASPM members of books they consider to be possible contenders for such an award. Authors nominated should preferably already be members of IASPM, or should become members of IASPM after being nominated, in order to be eligible. The nominations should be sent at this stage to the Chairs of the Book Prize Jury Felipe Trotta and Sílvia Martínez (bookprize2019@iaspm.net) by 10 November 2018.
When nominating a book, please provide the following details:
• Author, nationality
• Bibliographical information, including language and page count of the book nominated
• Confirmation of IASPM membership, including branch
Authors may either self-nominate, or other members may nominate authors and books they regard as worth considering for the award. Please let us reiterate the criteria for eligibility:
• a single author
• a member of IASPM
• her/his first book (in any language)
Books nominated must have been already published and be commercially available from January 1st 2017 to October 31st 2018. The notification of acceptance will be sent via email, by Chairs, before November 30th. In order to be assessed by the IASPM Book Prize Jury 2019, an electronic copy of each book must be sent by the publisher or the author before January 10th 2019 to the Book Prize Chairs. A hard copy of the book must also be sent to the Canberra 2019 Organizing Committee before June 2019.
Please circulate this call within branches, and please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about the 2019 IASPM Book Prize.

4th ISMMS biennial international Conference, 17-20 June 2019, Nantes (France)
“Locating Heavy Metal Music and Culture”
www.francemetalstudies.org
1. Presentation
Five years have passed since the inception of the ISMMS (International Society for Metal Music Studies), an international association that has been triggering a new dynamic of collective research on hard rock, heavy metal and metal within the humanities and social sciences. It was officially launched during the first conference on “Heavy Metal and Popular Culture” at Bowling Green State University (Ohio, USA) in April 2013. This founding event which was followed in 2015 by the “Modern Heavy Metal: Markets, Practices and Culture” at the University of Helsinki’s (Finland) International Institute for Popular Culture, and in 2017 by the “Boundaries and Ties: the Place of Music Communities” Conference one at the University of Victoria (British Columbia, Canada).
Within that time span, academic research and events dedicated to metal studies (books, scholarly journal issues, conferences, and workshops) have multiplied all around the globe – a process confirmed by the creation in 2013 of Metal Music Studies (Intellect Books), an interdisciplinary research journal.
Following the United States, Finland and Canada, France will thus be hosting the 2019 edition of this metal studies conference. After years of prosperous research and study, and six years after the birth of the ISMMS, time has come to review knowledge on metal music and culture.

Call for Proposals
Popular music has long been centrally concerned with death and the afterlife. Songs, recordings and musical traditions have expressed both mourning and celebration, and have – in some cases – helped envision the possibilities of a continued existence where “death is not the end.” From gospel to metal and beyond, music pays tribute to the departed, offers opportunities for ceremony and commemoration, and helps to process tragedies both personal and public. It even blurs the boundaries between states of life and death, offering sonic and symbolic evidence for hauntings, purgatories, and the continued presence of ancestors in the lives of the earthbound. Genres, formats and media exist in a continual process of transformation, decay and re-emergence—and boost both active artists and defunct (or deceased) ones. Songs and performances are reborn through new versions, different contexts and changing relationships with audiences.

Riffs: Experimental Writing on Popular Music – Volume 3 – Issue 1 (cfp)
Ideas of noise…
Submissions should in some way critically engage with “ideas of noise” as a statement, a question, or even consider the Birmingham-based experimental sound festival, Ideas of Noise.
As the journal title suggests, we are interested in pieces that take an experimental approach to the consideration of popular music. For examples of pieces based on previous prompts, have a look through our current and past issues.
We encourage experimental audio, visual, and additional written contributions, from composition to poetry. Ten contributions (to include visual contributions up to six pages of A4) will be published online and in limited edition print in February 2019.
