Music and the Middlebrow

We are now inviting proposals for the forthcoming conference on Music and the Middlebrow. We welcome abstracts for individual papers (20 minutes) and panel sessions (3 papers) that respond to the project rationale.

Keynotes: Joan S. Rubin and Richard Taruskin

Possible topics include, but are not limited to, the relationship between music, the middlebrow and:

* Popular culture
* National identity
* Film
* Theater
* Cultural geography
* Religion
* Politics
* Social class
* Race
* Gender

This conference is being organized by Christopher Chowrimootoo (University of Notre Dame) and Kate Guthrie (University of Southampton).
