If there are at least five members of the Association in a country or a supra-national region, they may – according to the statutes – form a branch (or a chapter as it is called in some countries). Currently IASPM is subdivided in these branches:

Australia/New Zealand
The chapter has over 50 members, with most residing in Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland. While networks are being established for monthly seminars, the main forum for members remains the annual conference. Members' interests encompass a range of disciplines: cultural studies, ethnomusicology, sociology, media, Music and film studies, with increasing interest from journalists and local musicians. Members' work is published in the Pacific journal of research into contemporary Music and Popular culture, Perfect Beat.

Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg)
IASPM Benelux has over 40 members. In cooperation with the Dutch Pop and Rock Institute we organise seminars on current research. Occasionally small scale conferences are held. The most recent conference was held in Amsterdam on October 17th and 18th, 2001. The theme of this conference was 'Popmusic, Globalization, and Identity' and speakers included Timothy Taylor, Susanne Binas, Simon Frith, and René Boomkens. More recent, lectures were given by academics including Peter Christenson (US) and Hyunjoon Shin (Korea).

Bulgaria
At present the branch members are affiliated to the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (21 Krakra St., 1504 Sofia, Bulgaria; Phone: +3592 441901). Their research interests encompass different aspects of pop, rock, jazz, ethno, dance, urban instrumental, and electronic Music, approached from a broad range of perspectives including cultural studies, media, musicology, ethnomusicology, pedagogy, history and theory, politics, sociology, new technology.

Canada
There are close to fifty members of IASPM-Canada, many of whom participate at both the national and the international level. Among our membership are academics, performers and journalists who share a common interest in Popular Music.

The Czech branch has currently approx. 15 members in Prague, Brno, Olomouc and Banska.

France
This branch (branche francophone d'Europe) joins French speaking scholars from all over Europe.


Italy
Along with research projects in the field of Popular Music, the main activity concerns the organization of lectures, seminars, and conferences in collaboration with various universities (Bologna, Trento), and institutions like SIEM (Italian Society for Music Education) and GATM (Music Analysis and Theory Group). Japan
Established in 1988, the Japanese branch of IASPM is affiliated not only by academics but also music critics, journalists, teachers, and fans. Today most of the activities have been officially transferred to its sister organization, the Japanese Association for the Study of Popular Music (JASPM). It holds meetings every trimester at four regional branches and one national annual meeting. The 9th International IASPM conference in Kanazawa held in 1997 was the largest event the branch organized.

Latin America (IASPM-AL)
This new branch of IASPM organizes some 80 members all over Latin America, for instance in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay. The branch keeps contact to quite a few local sub-branches and organizes conferences regularly. La directiva actual de IASPM-AL, elegida en La Habana en Junio del ańo 2006, está integrada por:

Nordic Countries (Sweden, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Denmark)
The main goal of the Nordic Branch is to provide a forum for those involved in the study of Popular Music in Nordic countries, to meet and to exchange information.The branch currently has around 20 members, mainly in Finland and Sweden. Special interest has been given to the history of Popular Music in the Nordic countries. In Sweden this kind of work has been undertaken by Lars Lilliestam and Alf Björnberg (University of Gothenburg), and on Iceland by Gestur Gudmundsson (University of Reykjavik). In Finland a large research project was initiated in 1999 with the aim of studying the history of popular music in Finland (lead by Vesa Kurkela and Pekka Jalkanen, University of Tampere). In Norway the musicological analysis of popular music is undertaken at the University of Oslo (Stan Hawkins). The Nordic IASPM branch arranges conferences for researchers and students interested in popular music studies.

Slovenia
Founded in December 1995, it has now 15 members. The intellectual profiles range from sociology, ethnomusicology, ethnology, philosophy to Music journalism and criticism. Most of the members have been actively involved either in publishing or broadcasting articles, books, translations, related to various aspects of Popular Music and culture. In March 1998 the association was registered in accordance to Slovenian legislation. Main activities concern: the publication of papers from the "Balkan Popular Music Conference", held in Ljubljana, November 1996; the start of archival CD series of Slovenian Popular Music (beginning with film music by the late composer Bojan Adamic); co-organisation of a conference on sound and music on film (Ljubljana, spring 1999).

Spain
The current Spanish branch has around twenty members from different points in the country, coming mainly from the academic world (ethnomusicology, anthropology, sociology...), but it is expected in short to broaden into new groups as musics, media, etc. in order to promote multiprofessionality. Within the projects of the branch it is included to try to tighten the links of co-operation with the Spanish speaking countries of America. At the moment, the Spanish branch is part of the ethnomusicological society SIBE - Sociedad de Etnomusicología.

Turkey
The recently founded Turkish branch is made up of members from different disciplines of the academic world. The branch gives priority to increase its membership, to encourage for research on Popular Music, to organize annual conferences and to start publication.

United Kingdom & Ireland
The UK & Ireland branch of IASPM has around 70 members. It publishes a Newsletter twice a year and has its own e-mail list. The UK & Ireland branch organizes a conference every year where there is no international conference.

United States of America
IASPM/U.S. has been very active during the last years which has led to a growth in membership of now almost 200. An effort is being made to reach out to non-academics who study Popular Music from the fields of journalism and elsewhere. Quarterly the branch/chapter publishes a Newsletter (Editor: Theo Cateforis), once a year an issue of the The Journal of Popular Music Studies (Editorial collective: Deborah Pacini Hernandez, Jeff Melnick, Murray Forman, Rachel Rubin, Reebee Garofalo).
